Odds and probability

What lottery odds mean, how they are worked out for each prize tier and what they cannot tell you, in plain numbers.

Lottery odds tell you how likely a prize is. They are often written like this: 1 in 292,201,338. That is the chance of winning the Powerball jackpot with one ticket. It means one number set wins out of that many possible sets.

Every prize level has its own odds. Small prizes are much more likely than the jackpot. The odds come from counting. First, count every way the numbers can be drawn. Then count the ways that match a prize. The two counts give you the odds.

Odds do not change with the numbers you pick. Each draw starts fresh. A number that came up last week has the same chance next week as any other number. Past draws do not predict future draws. No method improves your odds. The guides on this page explain the math in plain words. They show what the odds mean and what they cannot tell you. You can read them without any math skills. The LottoCheck app can also check your ticket after a draw.

Questions about odds and probability

What do lottery odds mean?

Lottery odds show how likely a prize is. "1 in 100" means one winning outcome among 100 equal outcomes. A bigger second number means a rarer prize. The odds are the same for every ticket in the same draw.

What are the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot?

The odds are 1 in 292,201,338 for each ticket. That number is fixed by the game rules. Buying more tickets raises your chance only a very small amount. The jackpot size does not change the odds.

Can I improve my lottery odds?

No. Every number set has the same chance in a fair draw. Lucky numbers, patterns and past results do not help. Only the game rules set the odds. Play for fun and spend only what you can afford.

Are some numbers more likely to be drawn?

No. Each number has the same chance in every draw. Some numbers come up more often by chance over time. That does not make them more likely next time. Past draws do not predict future draws.
