Game guides

Rules, draw days, prize tiers and add-ons for Powerball, Mega Millions and state lottery games.

Learning how to play Powerball takes about a minute. You pick five white numbers from one set. You also pick one red Powerball from a second set. You can pick the numbers yourself or ask the machine to pick them. A machine pick is called a quick pick.

Then a draw picks the winning numbers at random. You win a prize when your ticket matches enough of them. Some matches win a small prize. The top prize needs all the numbers. Mega Millions and many state games work in a similar way. Each game has its own number ranges and its own prize levels.

Games also differ in price, in add-ons and in draw days. Add-ons cost extra and can raise the size of some prizes. Rules can change over time. Read the official page of the game for the current price, the current prize levels and the draw schedule. The guides here explain each game in plain words. They cover how to play, how to read a ticket and what the add-ons do. They do not promise any win. Every ticket has a very low chance of the top prize. You can check a ticket in the LottoCheck app after the draw.

Questions about game guides

How do I play Powerball?

Pick five white numbers and one red Powerball number on a play slip, or ask for a quick pick. Pay for the ticket before the draw. After the draw, compare your numbers with the winning numbers.

What is a quick pick?

A quick pick is a set of numbers chosen at random by the lottery terminal. It has the same chance as numbers you choose yourself. Many players use it because it is fast and needs no thought.

Do state lottery games have different rules?

Yes. Each game has its own number ranges, prizes and draw days. State games also follow state rules. Read the rules on your state lottery's official site before you play.

How old must I be to play the lottery?

You must be 18 or older in most states. Some states set the age at 19 or 21. Check your state lottery's official site for the rule where you live. Shops can ask you for proof of age.
